Spring Break Travel Safety
Millions of Americans take advantage of schools being out for a week in Spring and travel. In this day and time, there is so much more to planning the trip than making hotel reservations and grabbing a roadmap at the gas station while filling up on the way out of town. These guidelines will help make the most of the trip while taking care of ourselves.
Driving Safety
- - If your destination is more than an hour away from home, have your vehicle’s engine and parts thoroughly checked, including all fluids, belts and the battery, and make sure your tires are in good condition and properly inflated.
- - When using electronic navigation, be sure your destination address is correct, and the map is routed correctly.
- - Don’t forget to check the forecast for your travel route. It may be Spring, but the weather can vary greatly, so be prepared for wintery weather with icy road conditions, as well as severe weather.
- - Have an emergency road kit in the trunk that includes a flashlight, jumper cables, warning flare or triangles, warm blankets and a rain poncho. Many auto stores have emergency kits ready for purchase.
Staying Safe in the Air
- - Make sure you add an extra two hours to your arrival time to the airport for the TSA screenings. If you’re traveling with family, separate the kids between the adults and go to separate security screenings, and it will make your wait much shorter.
- - Have your in-flight must-haves in a separate zip-closure disposable bag so you can grab it quickly before you stash your larger bag in the overhead storage. If you need water, avoid paying the outrageous prices at the airport--check an empty water bottle through security, and fill it up at a fountain on the way to the gate.
- - It’s still flu season, among other illnesses, so take care once you’re on the plane.
- Purchase a travel size bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer, as well as alcohol-based disinfectant wipes. Wipe everything down before you get comfortable, giving extra attention to your food tray, and the back of the seat pocket area, but use the hand sanitizer every time you touch any surface on the plane.
Data Safety While Traveling
- - If you can, leave your cell phone at home, and opt for a prepaid burner phone for travel purposes and staying in touch.
- - When you’re not using the WIFI, disable it on your device, as well as the Bluetooth signal. Don’t give hackers a way to access your stored personal data.
- - When you get to your hotel, ask the desk clerk for the official WIFI router name and password, and see if there are other networks available throughout the property. If not, don’t be fooled by a “better connection” while you’re having dinner in the hotel restaurant. Fake WIFI connections can be created by hackers, and the connections aren’t secure, and your personal information can be breeched.
- - If you must pay for something online, disable your WIFI connection and use your cellular data as a security measure.
Spring Break should be just that--enjoying the warm weather and rebooting yourself for the upcoming Spring season. Whether you’re going abroad or staying stateside, the CDC has some suggestions to protect your health on your trip. You and your family deserve to return from your travels healthy, rejuvenated, and most of all, full of great memories.
