Study Space Ideas

Homework can be a touchy subject with some parents and most kids, but it must be done, so it’s a good idea to have a designated area for your student at home.  These tips and ideas offer some inspiration for your family’s study spot:

- Since our kitchen and dining rooms are used only at meal times, consider this area for school work, especially if you have more than one child in school.  The table is large enough for everyone to spread out books and binders, and there’s normally plenty of lighting.  Have a container for supplies for each child, and file folders to stay organized.

- Do you have a home office?  Why not create an area for your children there?  Have different labeled baskets or plastic containers for each person’s supplies and add another desk or small table for extra surface space.

- If you’re handy with tools, DIY your own “cloffice” --a space that is an office converted from a little-used closet.  Lowe’s has an easy-to-follow guide for this weekend project.

- Most teens would like a study space to themselves, and there are many loft-style bed kits with study space below.  Beds sizes can be twin or full, and the bed frames have different extras, like shelving and drawers as well as a desk for a tucked-away space of their own.

- Any unused space is perfect to place a tables and organizer items for a homework hub--that empty corner in the living room, or even attic space! This Old House shows us many different ideas to re-think the spaces we already have.

- Just like an adult’s workspace, keep the study areas clutter-free.  Make sure the kids clean up when the homework is done, and have containers for supplies, and file folders for ongoing assignments or work that’s already graded. Keeping completed work filed away will come in handy when it’s time for any test prep.

- If there simply isn’t a way to create a dedicated study space, consider using an organizing cart with a section for each child.  Make a homework station out of whatever spot they can take the cart!

Keep in mind that a routine is key to getting homework done, getting ready for the next day, as well as reading and signing important papers from the school.  Homework may be a drag, but making it part of the weekday schedule with a place for working will take the sting out of the task.
